Music holds a special place in my heart: Shruti Haasan

Actress, singer and musician Shruti Haasan has explored her musical side and come up with a new single titled Monster Machine. She talks to us about her new song, her love for indie music, and her upcoming projects.
BREAKING FREE FROM CONVENTIONAL NORMS
For me, this single is an expression of various feelings, particularly the exploration of dark feminine energy. Society often imposes expectations on women, dictating how we should behave and present ourselves.This video is all about celebrating the darker and shadowy aspects of people, breaking free from conventional norms.
The title stems from the idea that when you’re misunderstood, especially as a woman, you might be labeled a ‘monster’ or a ‘raatchasi’. It’s about owning that label and turning it into a powerful, terminator-like force. That’s how I feel (smiles). The concept resonates with my own experiences, where I’ve been questioned, but I embrace my true self and the other sides of my femininity. I like showing my femininity in a different way. That’s the inspiration behind all this..
‘JOURNEY OF SELF-LOVE HAS BEEN TRANSFORMATIVE’
I believe that I didn’t love myself enough in the past. The greatest love in my life has been learning to love and accept myself to the fullest. This journey of self-love has been transformative, and it’s not just about me; I also strive to share things that add value to others’ lives.
‘REPRESENTING TRUTH THAT IS VISCERAL AND RAW’
The concept for the single revolved around showcasing two extremes: the so-called ‘perfect’ woman who sits and waits, and the deepest, darkest monster, representing truth that is visceral and raw. It was essential to assemble a supportive team to bring this vision to life. Dwarakesh, the director of the music video, played a pivotal role in understanding and executing the concept. Because, we did one version first and then the other; he was there for me throughout.
ON INSPOS AND COLLABS
I draw inspiration from legendary musicians like AR Rahman and Ilaiyaraaja. Additionally, I’m impressed by Tamil rappers and take inspiration from ’90s pop stars like Alisha (Chinai) and Lucky Ali. Their music videos left a lasting impact on me.
‘LOVE VISUAL MEDIUM’
I’m planning to release music videos more frequently now. Cinema has given me so much and I love using the visual medium to enhance the impact of music. By adding storytelling and visual elements, music becomes even more powerful
UPCOMING PROJECTS
I may collaborate with my father Kamal Haasan for a music video. We are already working on it. In fact, he was the first to see this music video, and he liked it. My film Salaar is set to release in December, and I’m also thrilled about my international film, The Eye, which has received a positive response in the festival circuit. It’s a heartfelt story that resonates with every woman out there and is a testament to the power of women. I am so happy to have been part of the all-women team and I have so much belief in this project.
